Welcome to my Omega watch site. My favourite omega watch at the moment is the Omega Planet Ocean wrist watch which is just so classy and I love it, so I thought I would review it here. I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to watches, I am always looking for something different, I started many years ago with a Casio (don’t laugh) then moved on to a Citizen then a Seiko then a Rado, I even bought a watch in Spain for about 5 pounds because its was unusual, of course it didn’t last long but it was different and that’s what I personally like in a watch.

Now I am on to the Omega Planet Ocean, even the name is fantastic, I don’t like model numbers, give me a great name anytime. Anyway, why did I choose this watch and whats good about it, I will try to explain this in my personal review of this great watch.

So let’s get to the review. If you want a Omega Planet Ocean you have 10 to choose from. This is where the model numbers come in. You have lots of features to choose from such as Seamaster automatic chronometer, self winding, stainless steel straps, rubber or leather straps.

Obviously I am not going to talk about all 10 watches here, so let’s get to the watch that I opted for. I chose the Omega Planet Ocean model number 2218.50.00. This watch has the orange bezel that drew me to this particular watch in the first place. It’s got a black dial, chronograph and date and of course a scratch resistant glass face.

As you would expect from a Seamaster, it’s a divers wrist watch, of course you don’t need to be a diver to own this watch, no more than you need to be an astronaut to own the Speedmaster Apollo 11 watch, but if you are a diver its waterproof down to 2000ft.

The Look And Feel of Omega Planet Ocean

Well since I choose this particular model you would expect me to say it looks great.

I personally like the orange bezel mixed in with the black face it’s just a great look for me anyway. In fact my Rado watch had a similar feature, I had a black Rado with an orange digital readout, almost like an LED watch (remember those) and for me it’s just a great look. Of course it wont suit everybody and you can buy the same watch without the orange or if you want more orange you can buy one with an orange leather strap as well.

I personally like the stainless steel straps and this watch is very comfortable to wear. It’s a good weight and a good size with a case diameter of 45.5 millimetres. There are also leather and rubber straps to choose from if you’re not a fan of stainless steel.

Technical Specifications: Omega Planet Ocean

Like I said above I will buy a cheap or expensive watch if it’s different than the norm and the technical side has always been secondary to me but I know some people go nuts for the techie side so here we go.

Self-winding chronograph movement with column wheel mechanism and Co-Axial Escapement
Domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
Stainless steel case
Black dial
Water Resistance down to 600 meters (2000 feet)
Screw-in crown
Unidirectional rotating bezel
Helium escape valve
Date
Chronograph
Chronometer
Small seconds

So that’s about it. I hope you liked my review and it helps you with your choice of Omega Planet Ocean

There are certain times in history that can have a defining moment for mankind and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon was one such occasion when human beings walked on the moon for the first time. So it will be no surprise that anybody associated with that moment could share in that history and in this article we will talk about how the Omega Speedmaster wristwatch which was not only able to share in this moment but as a result became the most popular wristwatch in the world.

When people talk about the Omega Speedmaster history, they talk about 1969, the only watch in the history of watches to be worn by an astronaut on the moon, fact is, the Speedmaster was first introduced in 1957, so how did Omega manage to get their watch on to a NASA moon mission.

I’d have to say at this point that Omega were extremely lucky because their watch just happened to be picked along with a number of other manufactures by NASA in about 1962 just for assessment purposes. After a number of years of gruelling tests in pressurised situations the Omega Speedmaster won. Now I’m sure it wasn’t as easy as that, but to have your watch tested and certified by NASA is not going to do your company any harm is it, but lets face it, the Speedmaster was picked because it was and still is a fantastic, well built and accurate timepiece and as an Omega owner myself I agree with NASA.

Now we all know that Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon with his Omega Speedmaster don’t we, WRONG, yes, he was the first to walk on the moon but he wasn’t wearing his Speedmaster, why, because the lunar module had a problem with its electronic timer and Armstrong decided his Speedmaster would be a reliable backup, so he left it in the module in case it was damaged during his moonwalk. WOW, can you imagine the pride of Omega, two astronauts wandering about on the moon and just in case the lunar modules timer couldn’t be fixed properly they had an Omega Speedmaster as backup in the module. You just can’t buy that kind of publicity.

So the first Omega Speedmaster to be worn on the moon was by Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon and so history was made for mankind and the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch as it is known today.

Omega didn’t stop there, their Speedmaster watches were used in the shuttle missions after even more tests and they were also adopted by the Russian Space Station MIR after even more tests, in fact the Omega Speedmaster is the most tested watch in history.
